Voice Acting for OTT Commercials

Summary: This project involved providing voiceover work for OTT commercials targeting a global military audience. Using Rhetorical Theory to build trust through tone and User-Centered Design to address the unique challenges military families face during PCS moves, I ensured the messaging resonated deeply with the audience. By carefully pacing the narration to reduce cognitive load, the content was both engaging and easy to understand, making it an effective ad for OTT platforms like Hulu and YouTube.

About the Project

Lost During My PCS is a very active Facebook group that networks around the globe to help those moving, or “PCSing,” find or return lost items. They had a limited budget for advertising since it’s a free service, but they needed to reach a global community. OTT commercials on platforms like Hulu, YouTube or Netflix provided an affordable way to get the word out. The owner hired me for voice acting, technical script writing, and video editing, ensuring the messaging was clear and trustworthy for military families. I also helped refine their brand positioning to connect authentically with their unique audience.

The Theories & Solution

Reducing Cognitive Load: By carefully pacing the narration and pausing during key moments, I allowed viewers to process the visuals without cognitive overload. This approach made it easier for military families to absorb important information about the free service, without overwhelming them with both visual and auditory input at once.

Rhetorical Theory: I used my voice strategically to engage and persuade the military community, creating a connection through tone and trust. By adding “reliability” to my voice, I conveyed empathy and understanding, aligning with the group’s mission to provide support and peace of mind for families moving globally.

User-Centered Design (UCD):
I tailored the script to quickly connect with military families, addressing the challenges they face during PCS moves. I incorporated a sense of community and reassurance, acknowledging the stress and concerns they experience while moving between locations, especially the risk of losing valued personal items.
